Means of characterization (water and solid analysis)

Tests for what ?

Knowledge of rock mechanical characteristics is linked to the development of studying methods (crushing, creeping, porosity, permeability) to develop rock etching tools (drilling equipment, drilling test benches and analogue and digital models. ...).

The characterization of pollution is part of the field of the interaction between solid phases and waters (surface waters but also deep waters, in the case of storage). The behaviour of solid phases depends on the fluid phases which bathe them, and vice versa. These studies therefore demand the best possible characterisation of solid and fluid phases to further constrain geochemical models. Moreover, understanding the behaviour of a polluting element in its current state enables to foresee predictive scenarios to intervene on pollution. The strength of these modellings directly depends on the accuracy of solid phases and waters characterisation, and first and foremost on the quality of field sampling.

The Geosciences department has :

  • sampling material to ensure the quality of field samples (all subsequent studies depend on on-field sampling) ;
  • laboratories for solid analysis to determine the nature and the constitution of mineral constituents which affect their reactivity ;
  • a laboratory for water analysis since water is the primary vector of chemical elements migration.

The purpose of the knowledge of solids and waters is to propose a geochemical modelling of solid-water interactions.
